A different angle on Abby Road

I stumbled across this great shot on BeatlesBlog the other day. From one of my favourite albums, here is a behind-the-scenes look at the Abbey Road cover shoot. Bet you didn’t know you can also check out a live web-cam of the crossing on the Abbey Road Studios website.

A matter of Foo.

Welcome dear reader. Thanks for showing interest and clicking trough to this website, as an early adopter you are getting a sneak peek at my latest project. This website was designed for two reasons, firstly, I needed a live platform on which to experiment with PHP code and WordPress, and secondly, I wanted to document and share some of the thoughts that hound my mind.

There is also a bigger project in the works here but you will have to stick around to find out more about that over the course of the coming months. Social Foo is an idea-placeholder I started toying with in 2011. It was conceptualised after I saw how much opportunity and potential there is for collaboration in South Africa’s digital landscape.

2011 was also the year I stepped into the world of PR and digital communications after a 10 year career as magazine editor. I am not going to lie to you, it was an easy transition to the dark side, and one which I have taken to like the proverbial fish to water. As a team of one handling HTC’s PR and communications, I quickly learned the ropes and managed the entire portfolio from conception to execution. It was fun times but it was short lived. I wanted more but this time I only wanted the good stuff. Social Foo, for now, will be the blank canvas on which I will build this journey. If you see anything you want to know more about or would like to talk to me about any topic covered here, I encourage you to get in contact with me.

Don’t expect many updates here, the real work is happening in the background and will launch when its ready.

Finally! The CANON POWERSHOT G1X

The PowerShot G-series range of cameras have changed the way DSLR users view compact photography. It offers similar controls and functionality generally reserved for SLR cameras but in a body that is a lot more portable.  Although I loved my Canon EOS 7D, I often found it cumbersome to carry around with me, especially on holiday. With a fast f2.8 lens, 720p video recording, and a larger image sensor, the PowerShot G1X will undoubtedly impress.

Check out a preview on this camera at DPReview. I’ll be buying one the second they land in South Africa.

It will be mine… oh yes… it will be mine!

You think water moves fast? You should see ice. It moves like it has a mind. Like it knows it killed the world once and got a taste for murder. After the avalanche, it took us a week to climb out. Now, I don’t know exactly when we turned on each other, but I know that seven of us survived the slide… and only five made it out. Now we took an oath, that I’m breaking now. We said we’d say it was the snow that killed the other two, but it wasn’t. Nature is lethal but it doesn’t hold a candle to man.

Do you see any Teletubbies in here? Do you see a slender plastic tag clipped to my shirt with my name printed on it? Do you see a little Asian child with a blank expression on his face sitting outside on a mechanical helicopter that shakes when you put quarters in it? No? Well, that’s what you see at a toy store. And you must think you’re in a toy store, because you’re here shopping for an infant named Jeb.

Now that we know who you are, I know who I am. I’m not a mistake! It all makes sense! In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain’s going to be? He’s the exact opposite of the hero. And most times they’re friends, like you and me! I should’ve known way back when… You know why, David? Because of the kids. They called me Mr Glass.

Cinemagraphs are still images with variations of movement within the image. According to Wikipedia, the term was coined by two U.S. photographers Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck who used the technique to animate their fashion and news photographs in early 2011. There has since been a host of great examples floating around the Interwebs such as the amazing Stanley Kubric collection. With the right subject, cinemapgrahs add mood and emotion to an otherwise static image. I have collected a few interesting examples over the last few months and I now proudly display these on my digital photo frame (your digital photo frame has to support animated Gif files). I have also started toying with a few of my own cinemagraphs, so keep an eye on this space. It’s really not that difficult to make, you can see a great tutorial over at Lifehacker. Cinemgraphs are animated gifs for adults.
